I know SEO pretty well but I'm not very well versed in Google Local (or Yahoo Local). How do you get listed? And what are some things that will improve rankings in the local results?

For Google local, you can add your website to get listed in Google Local. You need to fill all neceesay details. Once you have filled you need to choose a verification method. Postal / SMS / Phone

Postal - Would take 3- 5 weeks to get your pin no to the address you have mentioned
SMS - you can verify your listing instantly
Phone - you can verify your listing instantly

I always suggest choosing phone verification method.

For yahoo local also the same applied. You need to fill all required information and wait for the moderators to verify your listing and approve.
